A gallery reception at WBGO

If you did not know, WBGO has a gallery. Every two months, or so, Dorthaan Kirk finds great art or photos, to hang in the hallways. She holds a opening reception for each, so, if you are so inclined, it is worth the trip to Newark to see what she hangs. The current exhibit is called:

Jet Black, Brown and Tan
An exhibit honoring the works of John H. Johnson THURSDAY, JAN. 18, 2007 from 6 – 8 PM
Live music by pianist John Di Martino. Refreshments will be provided.

Museum Founder and President Ralph Hunter will give a brief talk on the career of Ebony Publisher, John H. Johnson. There will be surprise guests and a special video will be shown of Gary Walker’s walk through the exhibit with Bill Cosby.

For more information, call 973-624-8880 or go to www.wbgo.org.
WBGO is a wheelchair accessible facility.

P.S. If you do make the trip to Newark you may want to eat in the Ironbound section (Fornos of Spain is my favorite) for great Spanish food, have a drink at the Savoy (they have music), Maize or 27 Mix.

Shopping Spree

November 15 - November 18

The Newark Museum
2006 Holiday Shopping Spree
http://www.newarkmuseum.org/pages/toc2.html

Wednesday-Friday, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm; Saturday: 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Save 20% on all Museum Shop merchandise, including jewelry, ornaments, fashions and much more!.

I LOVE MUSEUM SHOPS. One of my favorite shops is at The Newark Museum. The manager, Lorelei Rowers, has great taste and offers an incredible range of items at reasonable prices. I have purchased everything from luggage, clothes, books (they even have my books for sale), and candles to jewelry. I once used my luggage bag on a trip to Los Angeles and my friend insisted that I get one for her (which I did) and each time I wear the clothing that I bought I am asked where I purchased it. So, you can imagine my excitement when this Spree comes around because I can buy all of my holiday gifts there at a discount!

P.S.
The only museum that I found to not have a store was in Madras, India. You can imagine my disbelief to not find one. In shock, I shouted out, “I am a consumer, how can you NOT have a museum shop?” Well, what can I say, I am not the most sophisticated at times…But, I found what I was looking for at the museum in Bombay (now called Mumbai), India.

If you head out to Newark for the Spree you can eat lunch at The Newark Museum cafe but check first to see if it will be open after 3:00 pm. Or, you can have lunch or dinner at one of the following, close by, establishments.

27 Mix (http://www.27mix.com/), a half block from The Newark Museum
The Savoy (http://www.thesavoygrillnewark.com/savoy.htm )
Maize (http://www.rthotel.com/Maize/maize.htm, in the Robert Treat Hotel

I frequent all three restaurants, more detail to follow on another day. My comments will be posted under bars/restaurants/café’s.
