Tamara Tunie

Tony Nominations are in. Check out the list.

Tamara Tunie has taken Broadway by storm, not as an actor, but as a producer. She is the first African-American to have two plays running at the same time that have been nominated for several major categories. The two plays are "Spring Awakening" and "Radio Golf." I did see Radio Golf during the previews and enjoyed it very much. However, a longer review will follow. Listen to Tamara in her own words about "Radio Golf."

Bobby Sanabria Turns 50!

On June 3 Elena Martinez surprised Bobby with a PARTY at the Dakota Roadhouse on Park Place. It was a fun party with his family and many great musicians, most notably (for me), Candido and Benny Bonilla of "I Like it Like That" fame. The night was full of music, food and dancing and LOVE! May Bobby have 50 more great years.
Look for Bobby's new CD that is scheduled to be released this summer.

Congratulations to Dr. Julie Butler!

I do not own a pet (I had a cat YEARS ago) but, if I did I would take it to my friend, Julie Butler!

The Veterinary Medical Association of NYC, has selected her to be the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Service to Veterinary Medicine Award. Her award will be presented on April 28, 2007 at the Annual Awards Dinner Dance, to be held at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan.

Dr. Julie R. Butler, the founder and owner of the 145th Street Animal Hospital, earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and has been in practice for 23 years. She is a past president of the NYC Veterinary Medical Association, and one of the founders and present co-Vice-president of NY Save Animals in Veterinary Emergency (NYSAVE), a not for profit animal care provider. She and her family also reside in the neighborhood.

At the 145th Street Animal Hospital, clients can be certain that their pets “will receive professional, quality care with a personal touch.”

Grammy nominations!

Below are the nominees for the jazz categories, please check the website for a full listing of nominations.

Honorable Mentions:

Trumpeter, Christian Scott has been nominated. His debut CD, Rewind That, is quite good and one that I would suggest you consider getting your hands on. Christian, now 22 years old, hails from a musical New Orleans family, he has been playing with his uncle, saxophonist, Donald Harrison, since he was about 13 years of age. In his CD you hear all of his many musical influences from Rock to Jazz.

Another mention goes to pianist, Gerald Clayton, son of John Clayton, nephew of Jeff Clayton, who plays one tune on Roberta Gambarini’s nominated CD, Easy to Love. When you listen to his solo, on that tune, you will also hear lots of musical history coming from Gerald. Now touring with Roy Hargrove and other notables. Second place winner of the Thelonious Monk Competition this year, Gerald is one to watch. Like Christian, I have known 21-year-old Gerald, eight years and have watched them grow up.

It may seem as though this years jazz nominations is a Clayton Fest. Bassist John and reed man, Jeff Clayton co lead, with Jeff Hamilton, The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (CHJO). You can hear them perform with Diana Krall on her new CD, From This Moment On, AND, with Nancy Wilson on her nominated new release, Turned to Blue. You can learn more about Jeff Clayton and Chann Berry in my second book, How To Grow As A Musician: What All Musicians Must Know to Succeed. Congratulation to Chann for having his song, “These Golden Years” featured on Ms. Wilson’s release as well.
